NEW BOOK ON
NEWHAVEN 1928-1978
A Scottish Fishing Community

AUTHOR CHRIS GARNER has spent much of the past decade researching, interviewing and writing his new book on Newhaven which takes up the story of Newhaven and its occupants from 1928, the year the last boat, the Reliance, was built in the village until the period immediately after the redevelopment of its streets and houses.  Chock-full of people’s reminiscences and anecdotes, the text is written in an easy to read documentary style that weaves the stories and experiences of those who lived through the downward slope of the fishing industry and the demise of an old way of life that had sustained and supported  a community for generations.

A must read for Newhaveners, ex-pats and social historians alike, it contains eight pages of photographs, many of which have never been published before as well as an intriguing plan of Newhaven that illustrates how its people were able to sustain 82 businesses and shops in its heyday.
